Carol had packed lightly because she did not want to inconvenience anyone. That was how she had lived since her husband died, making herself smaller so her son’s new family would not feel crowded.
The airport lounge entrance was bright and cold, all blue glass and polished floors. Jenna moved ahead with Ryan, then stopped when Carol followed with her small suitcase.
She pushed the suitcase back with one hand and shook her head like Carol had misunderstood the trip. Ryan held the boarding passes and said nothing. Carol looked at him, waiting for the boy who once held her hand at airports to remember her. He only looked away.
Jenna reached toward Carol’s passport wallet, noticing the gold lounge card tucked inside. Carol held it close. Her husband had arranged it years ago when he was still alive, a travel benefit connected to the anniversary trip they never got to take. It had not been booked for Ryan. It had been reserved for Carol by her husband as part of a final travel arrangement she had been too shy to mention.
Ryan’s face tightened with regret. Jenna stepped back, her sunglasses no longer hiding the embarrassment.
Carol walked through the lounge doors with her small suitcase rolling behind her. The blue light inside felt calm, almost tender. For once, she did not shrink to make space for people who had forgotten to make space for her.
