Teresa had learned to arrive early, speak carefully, and never give arrogant people more emotion than they deserved. Blake loved taking small things from people because it made him feel large.
That morning, he took her parking badge in front of the executive entrance and treated the gesture like a lesson. Nina smiled beside him, already enjoying the story she would tell later.
Teresa held her leather folder tighter, not because she was afraid, but because inside it was the quiet reason she had come.
Blake tapped the stolen badge against the security tablet and smirked when it denied access. He thought the machine had proved his point.
Then the security chief arrived and noticed the black elevator card inside Teresa’s folder.
His posture changed immediately. He took the badge from Blake and returned it to Teresa with both hands. At the same moment, the lobby screen updated with the morning arrival notice naming Teresa Grant as the incoming ownership representative.
Blake stared at the screen as though technology had betrayed him. Nina’s smile collapsed into silence.
Teresa did not lecture them. She simply opened the executive elevator with the private card and stepped inside.
For years, Blake had confused visibility with value. He believed the person standing quietly in front of him must be beneath him.
The elevator doors closed before he could repair what his arrogance had revealed. Teresa did not need revenge. She had the building, the records, and the memory of his hand taking what was not his to take.
