Clara Bennett almost stayed home. She wore a simple dusty blue dress, carried a small clutch, and held a sealed ivory card.
At the wedding reception, Vanessa stopped her from sitting at the front family table and moved her place card to the back near the service doors. Clara saw there was space, but she understood what Vanessa really meant. She did not fit the perfect picture.
Emily, the bride, noticed from across the hall as Clara stepped away.
Then Thomas began his speech at the microphone and found an ivory note tucked inside his speech cards. He read it and paused. The note revealed that this exact venue date had originally belonged to Clara for her own anniversary celebration. Clara had given it up so Emily could have the room on the date her late mother had always dreamed of for her daughter’s wedding.
The room turned toward Clara. Vanessa went pale.
Emily crossed the ballroom in her wedding dress and hugged her aunt. Clara tried to tell her it was her day, but Emily said, “It is my day because of you.”
Vanessa had wanted everything to look perfect, but Clara made the wedding mean something. The family table became complete only when Clara was brought back to the front.
