The Price of Dignity

Mia had saved the receipt in a plastic sleeve because paper was easy to damage and hope was even easier. The dress had been ordered by her late mother months before, paid in small amounts after extra shifts and skipped lunches.

Mia came to the boutique in a faded yellow hoodie because she had nothing else clean enough for a luxury store. Claudia saw the hoodie first and made her decision immediately.

She pulled the garment bag away before Mia could touch it, acting as if the dress would be harmed by the wrong hands. A rich teen near the mirror laughed at Mia’s shoes.

Mia wanted to disappear, but she pulled out the folded receipt and held it like a shield.

Claudia reached for it, impatient and offended. Then the elder tailor stepped out of the fitting room and saw the stamp. He took the receipt gently and checked his record card.

The tag on the dress had Mia’s name written in careful script, placed there by her mother when the final payment was made.

Claudia’s face changed as the truth became impossible to style away.

The tailor placed the garment bag into Mia’s hands with respect. In the mirror, the rich teen stopped smiling. Mia did not suddenly become rich, glamorous, or loud. She simply became visible.

The dress had always belonged to her.

The boutique had only needed to be reminded that price does not decide who deserves dignity.
